For S/S 2011, Rei Kawakubo decided she would play on dual personalities, opposites, reverse. Her clothes are sewn inside-out, upside down, dresses collaged with jackets. The hairdresser, Julien Dy’s responded by taking wigs inside out before putting them on the models’ heads. I’ve included detail shots to get a somewhat full effect of her genius– although, to see these pieces up close would be the best way to get blown away. Not just by the precise construction (can you imagine what the patterns might have looked liked?), but the brilliance in the idea and how well its executed. Its true creative sparks like these, other designers get inspired by, in a few more seasons, in retails stores we’ll find the trickled down idea. But remember, it would have started here.
